Pink evenings for charity

More than 44,000 women and 300 men are diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK each year and exercise has been shown to reduce the risk by up to 40 per cent. To help fund research into the disease and encourage people to help prevent it, fitness professionals Mike and Peggy Briggs are organising their fifth year of charity classes in aid of Breast Cancer Campaign. Even the very unfit can benefit from gentle exercise classes and, better still, benefit others by attending a class to raise money for charity.

October is breast awareness month and aerobics events will be held nationwide. On Harris and Lewis this will mean Pink Pilates, Pink Yoga and Pink Swiss Ball. Mike and Peggy are looking to beat the £1,198 raised by last year’s events and are urging everyone to get in the pink.

Places at the classes can be pre-booked (essential for Harris) but there will be plenty of room in Lewis for those who want to drop in on the day. Everyone is welcome (as long as they wear something pink) and the classes will be suitable for all levels. Each class will cost £10 with all money going to the charity as Mike and Peggy are giving their services free of charge and the venues have been offered cost free.

The Lewis event will be held at Point Football Club on Thursday, October 13th, starting at 4.15pm with Pilates Matwork, followed at 5.30pm by Swiss Ball, then Yoga at 6.45pm. In Harris the event will be on Monday, October 10th. This will start with Pilates at 6.00pm, followed by Swiss Ball at 7.00pm and finishing with yoga at 8.00pm.

Beginners and the Over 50s are particularly welcome and no doubt some of the regulars will want to attend all the classes one after another. Those unable to attend can either sponsor a friend or make a donation – easily done on line from the Pink Page on .

Pilates instructor Peggy said: “This is our fifth year of fundraising for Breast Cancer Campaign and we hope to see plenty of our regular clients at the events, but we are also very keen to welcome newcomers. Participants often use this event as a taster if they are thinking of joining one of our 8-week courses. People have been very supportive over the past four years, sometimes just dropping into a class to pop something into the tin.”
