The Play@Home toddler book is set to be launched in the Western Isles this month; coinciding with a visit of the visit of Play, Talk, Read Bus to the Isles of Lewis and Harris.
Launched locally by NHS Western Isles in partnership with the Early Years Partnership and NHS Scotland, Play@Home is aimed at fostering children’s thinking, imagination and creativity to increase self esteem and confidence. The visit of the bus, meanwhile, will give parents the chance to come along and take part in book bug sessions and a Play@Home junk play session for parents and their little ones.
The launch will take place at Coll Community Centre at 10.30am on July 23, and all one to three year olds who attend will receive a toddler book. The book contains lots of simple and adaptable activities, using recycled or home-made materials. The Bus will also be visiting venues across Lewis and Harris and free books will be available to those who attend a Play@Home workshop.
Sara Aboud, NHS Western Isles Senior Health Promotion Officer, said that the aim is to set children on a path that will encourage a lifetime of health, movement and physical activity.
She added: “The programme is about trying to increase children’s confidence in their own ability and therefore, increasing their feelings of self-esteem. The Play@Home books offer a choice of simple and adaptable activities, using recycled or home-made materials.”
Irene Miller, the National Play@Home Co-ordinator, pointed out that the programme has been developed with the philosophy that parents are their children’s first teachers. Children learn through movement and play, they imitate sounds and actions. This programme is not only about what parents can do for their children, but just as importantly, what parents can do with their children.
