A report due to be considered by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar’s Transport and Infrastructure committee recommends approval of the proposal, subject to any necessary planning permission and Listed Building consents being obtained.

The scheme would see coloured lighting sources being fitted in the adjacent pavements to the Town Hall avoiding the requirement to install equipment on the building itself.

The report says that the project has a total installation cost of £30,000, with £16,000 being earmarked for the plan by The Western Isles Lifestyle Lottery and the remaining £14,000 being funded from the Comhairle’s Town Centre Legacy Fund. But £4,600 of associated VAT would be recoverable by the Comhairle.

The report confirms that the project would mean an estimated increase of £300 per annum in electricity costs which is proposed to be met from the existing Town Hall revenue budget.

Comhairle officers say in the report on the proposals that the authority has had a number of requests in recent years for the lighting of prominent buildings in commemoration of specific events and officers are of the opinion that the ability to light the Stornoway Town Hall in such a way would be desirable.
