Poor sea conditions mean St Kilda Swim is abandoned

The St Kilda Swimmers have had to abandon their attempt to swim from the Isle of Harris to St Kilda after a seven foot swell meant conditions were no longer safe for the support kayakers.

The team had set off yesterday (Sunday 29th) from Hushinish, Isle of Harris, at 12.45pm and had travelled 24 nautical miles before hitting the large swell at about 5am today (Monday 30th).

The team travelled on to St Kilda after they had to give up the swim, where they will stay overnight before returning to Harris tomorrow.

The 60 mile swim through the North Atlantic Ocean had never been attempted before.

The Team were swimming to raise money for The Leanne Fund, The Fishermen’s Mission and Yorkhill Children’s Charity.
