Positive outlook for Gaelic language services

In regards to Gaelic language services the review found that BBC Radio nan Gaidheal and BBC ALBA both had “loyal” audiences and were “highly valued” by native speakers.

BBC Radio nan Gaidheal has a claimed reach of 69% of Gaelic speakers, with BBC ALBA at 75%.

Following the publication of the review MG ALBA chief executive Donald Campbell said: “It is pleasing that the BBC Trust has recognised both the creative and educational value of BBC ALBA and acknowledged the praise the channel and Radio nan Gàidheal receives from a wide spectrum of audiences, especially from our core Gaelic viewers.

“We have been consistent in our view that the BBC should provide 10 hours of original programming per week to BBC ALBA which would provide parity for the channel with S4C in Wales.

“By doing so, we would be in a position to tackle the high repeat rate on the channel whilst building momentum in the wider creative sector in Scotland.

“We believe the 10 hours can be achieved in innovative and cost-effective ways and we look forward to discussing this with the BBC as recommended by the Trust.”
