Power cut caused by faulty underground cable

A power cut which affected 985 customers in Stornoway last night (Tuesday) was due to a fault in an underground cable.

Power supplies were cut off at around 8.30pm and were not back on until 10.10pm.

A spokesperson for Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) said it had predominantly affected the Cearns area of Stornoway although homes around Macaulay Road and Perceval Road were also affected.

Engineers were on site quickly and managed to isolate the fault using a process of elimination. Further work will be carried out today to investigate the cause of the fault and final repairs will have to be carried out which could mean the cable being dug up.

Specialist equipment will be used to test the circuit.

The power cut did not affect Western Isles Hospital, an NHS spokesperson confirmed.
