Programme supported by funding from the Big Lottery

Back Football and Recreation Club (BFRC) celebrated International Women's Day by organising a week-long series of events this month.

After successfully applying to the Big Lottery Fund’s Celebrate programme, BFRC was awarded £5,000 which was used to host a Disco Divas party for all the family, a ‘Celebrating our Women’ art exhibition, a coffee morning and Women’s Conference.

Terri Davies, sport and community project co-ordinator at Back Football and Recreation Club, said: “We were thrilled to be able to celebrate International Women’s Day in such a big way and involve the whole community.

“While the conference was intended as a treat for women aged 14+, the whole community was invited to come together to celebrate our women through the art exhibition, coffee morning and the family disco.”

The celebrations started with a family party on March 4. There was food and as the title “Disco Divas” suggests, there was lots of dancing to music from some of the greatest female artists.

The art exhibition featured the work of local female artists and included painting, sculpture, photography and crafts. The exhibition was open to the public from Thursday, March 9 – Saturday, March 11. On March 10, there was also a coffee morning, so guests visiting the exhibition could have refreshments.

The week was rounded off with a Women’s Day Conference. The day included guest speakers and scheduled workshops such as basic car maintenance, first aid or yoga. Guests were also able to choose from drop-in activities which didn’t need to be booked in advance such as printmaking, beauty treatments or life coaching. On March 9 the Cabraich Community Arts also visited with their Women’s Open-Mic Nite. The group meets fortnightly in different locations. For more information visit www.backfrc.org.uk
