Army Cadets from Western Isles Company, 1st Battalion The Highlanders, have recently returned from their two-week Annual Camp.

They trained alongside cadets from the rest of the battalion and members of the Orkney Independent Cadet Battery at Barry Buddon Camp, near Dundee.

The cadets participated in a varied programme of subjects using the extensive Defence Estate on the Barry Buddon peninsula, training which included a two-day fieldcraft and blank firing exercise and navigation.

While on camp the cadets took part in a military training package that included skill at arms training, small and full bore shooting, drill, first aid and physical achievement.

They also took part in adventure training, which was conducted at nearby Legaston quarry where the cadets got the opportunity to do rock climbing and abseiling.

The senior cadets also took part in challenging two day expeditions at Glen Clova, Loch Muick and Lochnagar in the Cairngorms National Park.

This year the battalion was joined by cadets from the Royal Canadian Cadet Force who were participating in a six-week exchange visit to the UK.

While the Canadians were at Buddon a cadet from The Highlanders is currently in Canada on a return exchange at the Whitehorse Cadet Training Centre in the Yukon.

After a well-deserved summer holiday, the cadets return to their detachment training the week commencing August 17, when they will be holding a recruitment open evening at each detachment location.

To join as a cadet you must be at least in secondary education and aged between 12-18 years old.

As well as cadets the company are also recruiting Cadet Force Adult Volunteers.

No previous experience is required as you would be provided full training to equip you to instruct and teach both cadets and adults in the variety of skills available to the Army Cadet Force.
