A Traffic Warden will continue to enforce parking rules in Stornoway over the next year.
An arrangement made between Comhairle nan Eilean Siar and Police Scotland in 2014 saw the service secured until March 2015, but this has now been extended until March the following year.
Police Scotland made a national decision in 2013 to withdraw Traffic Warden Services across Scotland bringing widespread concern about a potential increase in parking related offences.
Police Scotland has agreed to continue the Shared Service Agreement with the Comhairle until March 31st 2016 on the basis of the ongoing work in relation to the decriminalisation of parking enforcement.
This would mean that parking laws could be enforced by the Comhairle.
Councillors were expected to agree to extend the current Traffic Management and Parking Enforcement Agreement with Police Scotland until 31 March 2016 at a cost of £12k, to be funded from the income from ‘Pay and Display’ in Perceval Square.
