Replacement hospital a step closer for Castlebay

The building of a new hospital and care facility in Castlebay, Isle of Barra, took a step forward this week after initial-stage plans were lodged with the Comhairle.

The new ‘health and social care hub’ will replace the existing St Brendan’s Hospital, and will be built on a site to the north of the existing building, which will be demolished as part of the development.

The new hub will also give a new home to Castlebay GP’s surgery.

Current planning documents, submitted ahead of a detailed plan for the site, outline options for the design of the new building in-line with Comhairle planning policies and the concerns of other public bodies, including Historic Scotland, over the historic and environmental sensitivities of the site.

A design option for three smaller buildings rather than a single unit on the site is currently being explored by developers Hub North Scotland Ltd.

Earlier this year proposals to replace the existing facility, widely recognised as being no longer fit for purpose, were approved by the Scottish Government.
