Researching better air links between Stornoway and Aberdeen

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar has welcomed the recent announcement by the Department for Transport for “start-up aid” through the Regional Air Connectivity Fund.

Chair of Transportation and Infrastructure, Councillor John Mackay, said: “The Comhairle will to work with other key stakeholders including HIE, HIAL, HITRANS and current and potential service operators in assessing the feasibility of this as a realistic source of funding support for enhancing air services to and within the Highlands and Islands.”

The Comhairle has, for the last 18 months, been working with HIE, HITRANS and Eastern Airways in carrying out further research to better understand the travel market and the potential benefits of increased flights between Stornoway and Aberdeen.

“This research, led by HIE, was concluded in November 2014 and, since then, HIE has been discussing the findings of the research and the feasibility of enhancing the service with Eastern Airways with a view to enhancing connectivity between Aberdeen and Stornoway.”
