Road accident on Harris

Police and Highlands and Islands Fire and Rescue Service have been dealing with a single vehicle road traffic incident on the A859, ten miles north of Tarbert on the Isle of Harris.

A report was received at around 12.05 this afternoon that a lorry had overturned on the road and that the driver was trapped.

Police and fire attended and the man was later freed by HIFRS personnel. He was then taken by R100 Stornoway coastguard helicopter to Western Isles Hospital for treatment. His condition is understood to be serious but stable.

The road is currently closed and is expected to remain closed for some time.
