Scammers pretend to be from BT

Trading Standards are warning Consumers that there is a current fraud where island residents are being telephoned by scammers claiming to be from BT.

The callers state that your internet connection is affecting the BT service but that they can resolve the problem by talking you through a series of steps which ultimately gives them access to your laptop or computer.

The callers may even pretend to end the call, (whilst keeping your line open), so that you can call a fictitious number which they provide you with to check their authenticity.

This means the victim think they have called a genuine number but they are still talking to the scammers.

A spokesperson said: “Our best advice is to end the call. To be safe - wait around 10 minutes before you use the phone again in case the scammers have kept the line open.”

BT have confirmed on their website that this is a scam and their advice is not to go onto a website, type anything into a computer, install software or follow any other instruction from someone who calls out of the blue.
