Scottish Hydro Electric Power Distribution (SHEPD) will hold consultation events next week to discuss the replacement of the submarine electricity cable that connects Scalpay with Harris.

The existing cable, which is 0.77km long and crosses the Sound of Scalpay between Carnach in Harris and Port na Geiltan in Scalpay, is approaching the end of its operational life. The consultation will identify the best value method to replace the cable in order to maintain a safe and secure supply of electricity to SHEPD’s customers on the island.

The meetings will provide more information about the cable and possible methods for its replacement. This will allow members of the public and statutory bodies to feed back their views on the route corridor, the installation method and any potential impacts which should be taken into consideration.

SHEPD’s Stakeholder Manager Kirstine Wood said: “The Scalpay submarine cable that we are proposing to replace is coming to the end of its lifecycle. As part of the engagement process we want to receive comments and insight from the public and statutory bodies to ensure their views and opinions influence the final recommendations we will submit to regulator Ofgem and Marine Scotland.”

The events are taking place next week on: August 31st from 6pm to 10pm at the Harris Hotel in Tarbert; Thursday 1 September from 10am to 10pm at the Caladh Inn in Stornoway; and Friday 2 September from 10am to 4pm at the Caladh Inn in Stornoway. The work to replace the cable is expected to begin in late summer 2017.
