Shawbost photographer returns to An Lanntair

TWENTY-five years ago the An Lanntair arts centre was opened by Lewis-born poet Iain Crichton Smith on March 8, 1985, and exhibited the works of young Napier College photography student Murdo Macleod as its inaugural show.

Twenty-five years on and Murdo, originally from Shawbost, returns to the gallery with Gnis - a collection of images taken over his prolific career working with publications such as the Guardian and Observer.

An Lanntair Director, Roddy Murray, says: "It was an obvious choice to book-end our quarter century with exhibitions of Murdo's work.

"For sentiment and symmetry yes, but more importantly because his work deserves to be seen en masse and because the arc of his career so closely parallels that of An Lanntiar.

"We are delighted of course that this will be seen first on home soil," he adds.

Opening on July 3, Gnis contains seminal images of some of the most distinguished and prominent names in the fields of sport, the arts, politics, literature, science, business and entertainment, including: Bill Clinton, Girls Aloud, Stephen Hawking, Sorely Maclean, Michael Schumacher and Donald Trump.

Murdo says: "I am delighted to be invited to show my photos at the Lanntair. It really is a delight and a tremendous thrill to display this exhibition first at home."
