Third child dies after canoeing accident

A third child has now died following the canoeing accident off Gairloch.

The group of two adults and four children had been out on a Canadian canoe on Sunday when it capsized.

Two boys, Jamie (2) and Ewen Beaton (5), were recovered from the water and conveyed to Raigmore Hospital but sadly died. Their father Ewen Fraser Beaton (32) is still missing.

Five year old Gracie Mackay from Muir of Ord was also rescued from the water but has sadly passed away at Yorkhill Hospital yesterday (Monday).

Her father and sister survived the accident.

The incident was attended by Stornoway Coastguard and Leverburgh Lifeboat.

The Beaton family have issued the following statement and asked that their privacy is respected.

“We are utterly devastated by what has happened and the loss of our beautiful little boys. We appreciate all that has and is being done by emergency services to find their adoring father, Ewen. It is too difficult to say anything more at this time and we would appreciate our family being left in peace to grieve our terrible loss.”

A shoreline search resumes today for Mr Beaton’s body.
