Scotland’s Traffic Commissioner, Joan Aitken, has decided that taxi fares scales set by the Comhairle Nan Eilean Siar local council earlier this year will not be confirmed.
Her decision means that the Council’s decision, which took effect from March 2nd, will be reversed.
The taxi fares scales for the area will revert to those which came into effect on March 4th 2013.
Miss Aitken’s ruling comes after three appeals were made.
In a written decision issued after she considered the appeals without a hearing, Miss Aitken said: “I will not confirm the Council’s decision of 2 February 2015 and the fare scales determined on that day.
“Rather my decision will be that the status quo will prevail - that is the current fares scales will continue to apply in the Council’s area.
“Given that fuel costs have come down, I do not consider that this status quo decision will cause hardship to the operators and drivers pending a further review by the Council.
“I think that there is a real risk that if I confirmed the Council’s new fares scales a situation would arise which did not serve anyone well neither public nor operators/drivers/the Council.”
