Trawler blamed for loss of phone signal

Vodafone say the loss of phone signal around Stornoway and other parts of Lewis recently was caused by a trawler in Stornoway Harbour.

A spokesperson for the company said: “We have established that a trawler in the harbour at Stornoway caused interference with our signal. The ship in question left the harbour at 12.00 on 25 August and the signal has since been restored. Ofcom are now working with trawler’s owners to identify why this happened and to prevent it happening again.”

The loss of signal caused inconvenience for customers including town taxi drivers who missed out on jobs due to the lack of service.
