A variety of events to mark the outbreak of first World War are taking place in the Islands this week, on Monday evening, August 4th North Lochs Historical Society organised a special commemoration service at the North Lochs War Memorial in Crossbost.
The service was opened by Society member Murdo Macleod, wreaths were laid on behalf of Her Majesty the Queen, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, the society and the community.
A short service was given, and the participants were led in psalm singing, before a piper played Flowers of the Forest to conclude the commemoration event.
Afterwards participants were invited to the local community centre for the official opening of an exhibition put together by the historical society of pictures and memorabilia illustrating the lives of the servicemen and reminding us today of the hardships they faced.
The exhibition will be open Tuesday to Saturday from 2 to 4pm and Tuesday to Thursday from 7 to 9pm.
