Western Isles MSP, Alasdair Allan, has welcomed a ‘very positive’ contribution from Scotland’s island councils to the Smith Commission, which is currently considering options for more powers for the Scottish Parliament.
Alasdair Allan commented: “Many of the powers which could be exercised within island communities are still held firmly in Westminster, something which the Scottish Government continues to make the case to change.
“Lord Smith’s commission seeks to move constitutional debate on, and strengthen Scotland’s Parliament. I believe this in turn would provide opportunities for island communities.
“It’s good to see the three island councils believe, as does the Scottish Government, in the full devolution of welfare spending plus substantial new tax powers for Scotland, along with the Crown Estate being passed into local control.
“All of this provides opportunities for island communities and I hope Lord Smith will now come forward with a radical set of proposals that meet islander’s needs.”
