Western Isles pupils to reap the benefits of a new Aquaculture course

A new Aquaculture course will be available for secondary school children on the Western Isles.

The course, a Level 4 National Progression Award (NPA), has been set up by Lews Castle College, The Nicolson Institute and the Scottish Salmon Company (SSC).

Pupils who take the course can develop the skills needed to pursue a future career in the salmon farming industry - Scotland’s biggest food export.

Donnie MacLeod, SSC’s Marine Site Manager for East Loch roag, opened the course to a class of 13 students on Friday, May 30th, explaining the industry and job roles.

He said: “It’s great to see the interest that pupils from the Nicolson Institute have shown.”

“It was a pleasure to meet the pupils and SSC looks forward to working with the school throughout the year.”

The course is set up for S4 students starting in August this year.
