Work on the Comhairle’s new Shared Temporary Accommodation project started on site this week.
Cllr Kenny Murray Chair of the Comhairle Environment and Protective Service Committee welcomed the project start and said: “Local Contractor, Alex Murray (Construction) Ltd is building the £2m project on the former Acres Pitch.
“We hope the project will take 48 weeks to complete, and once in service, the accommodation provided will address the long standing needs of many of those in our community who are in urgent need of accommodation and have no immediate alternative.
“The building will be integral to the Comhairle’s Homeless service and has been a key aim in our Local Housing Strategy for some time now.”
The groundbreaking ceremony took place at 2.00pm on the 9th of April, where Cllr Kenny Murray the Chair of EPS Committee took over the digger controls for the event.
The Homeless accommodation project will be a new, purpose built, homeless accommodation unit with 24 rooms, providing short to medium term accommodation for up to 28 homeless people.
There will also be a team of six staff managing the building and looking after the welfare of the residents.
