The Adria Tour final has been cancelled after some players tested positive for coronavirus.

Grigor Dimitrov announced that he had contracted the virus on Instagram, and the tennis tournament’s final match was swiftly cancelled afterwards.

‘I am so sorry for any harm I might have caused’

The tennis player announced his positive test results on Instagram, just as Novak Djockovic was due to play Andrey Rublev in the final of the Adrai Tour exhibition series in Croatia.

Dimitrov posted a picture of himself wearing a face mask, and wrote a caption explaining the situation.

“Hi Everyone - I want to reach out and let my fans and friends know that I tested positive back in Monaco for Covid-19,” he wrote.

“I want to make sure anyone who has been in contact with me during these past days gets tested and takes the necessary precautions.

“I am so sorry for any harm I might have caused. I am back home now and recovering. Thanks for your support and please stay safe and healthy. GD.”

Have other players tested positive?

As well as Dimitrov, several other players in the tour have also tested positive for the virus.

World number 33 Borna Coric, who played against Djokovic, also tested positive. On Instagram, Coric wrote, “Hi everyone, I wanted to inform you all that I tested positive for Covid-19.

“I want to make sure anyone who has been in contact with me during the last few days gets tested! I am really sorry for any harm I might have caused! I’m feeling well and don’t have any symptoms.”

He ended the post by writing, “Please stay safe and healthy! Lots of love to all!”

The tour had previously received criticism for holding games in front of packed crowds, which were in accordance with Serbia's relaxed restrictions. Players like Djokovic, Dimitrov, Alexander Zverev, Dominic Thiem and others have also been pictured hugging, shaking hands and partying together.

Is the Adria Tour cancelled?

When news of Dimitrov’s coronavirus diagnosis broke, the scheduled final for the tour was quickly cancelled.

Tournament organisers said that the final had been cancelled as “a precaution and to protect the health of all participants and visitors.”

A statement read, “At all times we have strictly followed the epidemiological measures in place with the countries where the Adria Tour was organised.

“None of the people involved in the organisation and who have been in contact with Grigor have any symptoms.

“However, we are in close contact with health authorities in order to ensure that all people who were in contact with Grigor will be tested tonight. Since we do not want to risk, we decided to cancel the final match.”

Both Serbia and Croatia, where the tour has been held, eased lockdown measures before the events, with players not obliged to observe social distancing rules in either country.

The first event in Serbia attracted over 4,000 fans, and several thousand also attended the tournament in Zadar.
