Athletes take on 190km Heb race

More than 120 endurance athletes and volunteers took part in an inaugural 190km race on foot, bike and kayak in Benbecula and the Uists last weekend.

The Heb - Race on the Edge took place on September 3rd and 4th and the new multi-sport challenge included off-road running, mountain biking, and kayaking.

With an overall race time of 16:25:23, the winner was Craig Mattocks. However, the organisers stressed the event had a strong emphasis on particiaption, camaraderie and fun for all involved.

This was highlighted by the fact that less experienced competitors were able to take advantage of short-cut options built into the route.

Paul Bush OBE, VisitScotland’s director of events, said: “The Hebridean islands present a varied but always stunningly scenic landscape, making them the perfect stage for a multi-disciplne event.

“We are delighted to support The Heb through EventScotland’s National Funding Programme in its inaugural year.”
