Gazette readers will have read in last week’s paper how SRAC’s Connor MacLean had a stunning run in a mixed U17/U20 field of International runners to win the U17 Scottish Inter District Championship in Hollyrood Park, Edinburgh.
He was then selected to run for Scotland at last weekends Celtic Nation Cross Country International match at Cow Park on the outskirts of Dublin.
The SRAC runner went into the race in good form and from the start of the 6K international race set the pace for his Scottish team mates to follow.
Over three laps the Scots team who ‘packed’ as the leading group with one Irish runner took turn about setting the race pace. Connor typically lead lap one, before Euan Gilliham made a bid to break away in lap two. But Connor and Inverclyde’s Johnny Glen then moved away dropping Gilliham toward the end of lap two.
Glen’ last year U17 Scottish champion made a significant break in lap three from the SRAC boy and opened up what would be a winning margin 1K from the finish.
A Scots 1, 2, 3 secured a team gold to add to individual silver for Connor in a very successful International debut for the SRAC lad.
