Stornoway Running and Athletics Club hosted a top class Throws Coaching Workshop recently - a sign of the growth of the field event within the club over the last year, with a number of young athletes breaking in to the national rankings for 2014.
Organised by SRAC Throws coaches, Al MacRae and Helen MacDonald, the club welcomed Hugh Murray who is the Scottish Athletics National Coach Mentor for Throws and is the former National Throws coach, and Duncan Flockhart of Inverness Harriers, one of the leading club throws coaches in the country.
Duncan has had great success with young athletes coming through to national prominence in the age groups championships and rankings, and with the recent growth in SRAC’s own throws group, it was a fantastic development opportunity.
Indeed two of Duncan’s young athletes crossed the Minch as demonstrators on the day – Mary Flockhart, Duncan’s daughter, who is the no. 3 U17 Javelin thrower in Scotland, and Daniel Wilby who is the number one U17 Shot putter in Scotland, and also number three Discus thrower.
The club’s young throwers all took part in morning sessions with the experienced coaches, and a number of the club’s coaches then took advantage of the coaching workshops in the afternoon in what was a very informative, inspiring and worthwhile day.
As well as continuing their on-going work with the throws group, Al and Helen now have plans to hold a ‘Try it’ Throws session in the coming months in conjunction with the Nicolson Institute and the SRAC schools rep, Katy MacKenzie, to see if we can unearth some more local throws talent.
So if there are any youngsters out there who have always wanted to have a go and think they have what it takes, get in touch with Ms MacKenzie, or e-mail the club direct on - email@example.com
