SRAC’s runners took part in two very different events hundreds of miles apart in very different weather conditions last weekend.
SRAC ‘Young Guns’ Michael MacMillan and Connor MacLean made the journey to Birmingham for the Inter Counties Cross Country Championships as part of a team of only four picked to represent Scotland North.
The event also doubled as the UK senior and Under 20 team selections for the World Cross Championships in China.
MacLean, who’s success this season has been well documented in the sports pages columns and who’s most recent success was the under 17 national title, moved up to the under 20 category in a bid for selection to Team GB’s World Cross team. The race meant an extra two kilometres for MacLean as the U20 men raced an 8K route of Cofton Park Birmingham. Conditions for racing if anything were slightly warm at 14 degrees, the route challenging terrain but the ‘going’ was firm for most sections of the route.
The opening race of the day was the men’s under 20, 8K and Connor went into it with a race plan to do all he could for a top six placing. The pace from the gun was unbelievably fast, downhill from the team pens for 150 meters, sharp right turn and straight into a hill climb similar to the length of Stewart Drive in Stornoway.
