Last week the Bridge Club competed for the Club Championship Trophy.
Derek MacKenzie was back and playing with Stewart MacDonald and they made a formidable pair! Stewart continues to dominate the individual leader board and he appears in the Gazette as often as DR (MacDonald), but holding a trophy instead of a cheque!
There were some cracking hands last week and the winners, Stewart and Derek made a small slam on board 24 with an overtrick and a total of 7 tops.
They finished the evening with a score of 62% which was pretty impressive.
In second place were Irene MacKenzie and Harris MacKenzie with 59% and a small slam on board 3.
Some great bidding from them as everyone else settled for 3NT. They even made an overtrick and it was one of their 6 tops.
In third place were Janet Smith and Rita MacDonald. They scored 53% and just managed to beat Gerda Graauwmans and Jenny Morrison by a single Match point.
Then the Club met again on Saturday for its annual Christmas Bridge Bonanza.
This is traditionally an individual contest and there were 16 players competing for the title.
This year the winner received the ‘Bethesda Bear’ (kindly donated by Bethesda) and he will join Pudsey in ‘Benside’ for the next 12 months.
Congratulations to Liz Carmichael who won the Christmas Bonanza with 56%. She just pipped Norah MacDonald to first place.
In third place was Alice Read with 54% and her husband Pat took the booby prize beating Colin Scott by a whisker but only because he was the ‘best dressed man’.
The Club would like to convey its thanks to Newton Ward Association for the use of their premises, Bethesda for the donation of the Bear and Camerons Chippy for providing the Christmas Dinner.
