Bridge Club makes first foray into SBU competitions

This week Stornoway Bridge club made the first foray into SBU competitions with the Autumn Pairs.

For this competition every participating club submits the results from their evening and the winning pair are announced in November.

It’s not simultaneous so every club plays their own set of boards and the results are based on the percentages made on the night.

Last year Stornoway took second place with Mike Kisil and Dave Gormley achieving 72%.

This year there were 4 ½ tables and a 27 board movement. There were lots of interesting results and only two boards where everyone bid the same and they were ‘passed out’.

There were no slams made, lots of successful doubles and a few miraculous games and overall a thoroughly enjoyable night!

At the end of play two pairs came in joint first with a score of 61%. Congratulations to Liz Carmichael and Jimmy Ogilvie and Dave Gormley and Ken MacDonald.

Liz and Jimmy took 9 tops and only had two bad tables, against Ken and Dave and Stewart MacDonald and NL MacDonald. Ken and Dave took 6 tops and pecked away at the rest of the opposition.

In third place with 56% were Stewart and NL. Stewart continues to feature at the top of the leader board regardless of who his partner is!

Rita MacDonald and Janet Smith were the only other pair to make over 50%, coming in fourth with 54%.

Next week the Bridge Club compete in the Lord Thomson SBU Simultaneous Pairs.
