Last week the Bridge Club finally got round to playing the SBU Easter Pairs.
There was a good turn-out of five tables and a welcome return to Jean MacLeod and Derek MacKenzie, Sylvia Taylor and Iris Stewart and Irene MacKenzie and Harris MacKenzie.
The Easter Pairs is played throughout Scotland during the month of March and the local results are collated and compared against other clubs, with the final results being announced in April.
There were some interesting hands again this week and some questionable bidding. There were lots of games to be had and the occasional slam.
While a lot of contracts were made it was the overtricks that were all important. Board 23 was a perfect example. Every E/W pair bid to slam but Derek made an overtrick in 6NT which gave him and Jean one of their many tops. Stewart and Norman MacDonald bid 6C, and made an overtrick and ended up with nothing Who said Bridge was fair?
In third place this week with 123 Match points was Liz Carmichael and Jimmy Ogilvie. They were just overtaken by Rita MacDonald and Janet Smith who came second with 124 Match points.
In first place with 128 points were Jean and Derek. They took six tops and only had two bottoms all evening.
To date 33 clubs have entered this competition with 464 pairs in action.
Stornoway currently have four pairs in the top 100, Jean and Derek, Rita and Janet and Liz and Jimmy and Stewart and Norman MacDonald. Congratulations to all.
