Bridge Club plays in simultaneous competition

In total, 23 clubs participated and 275 pairs.

The club’s Jenny Morrison said: “It’s a popular competition for those interested in Master points and the hands are always challenging.”

Regarding the volume of people taking part, she said it was “quite an evening of Bridge across Scotland”.

Interestingly, the local heat winners didn’t feature in the top 50 nationally, whereas the pair in second place locally came in an impressive 21st overall and the fourth local placed pair were 40th nationally.

Jenny added: “Locally though, it was another notable win for Dave Gormley and Ken MacDonald with 61%.”

In second place were Derek MacKenzie and Jean MacLeod with 57% (and an overall score of 60%) and in third place were Norah MacDonald and Murdo Kennedy with 54%.

Rita MacDonald and Janet Smith, who were equal fourth locally, came 40th overall with 58%.

Jenny said: “Congratulations to Liz Carmichael and Jimmy Ogilvie who were the only local pair to bid and make a slam on Board 19.

“The author of the hand commentary predicted this may be a bid that was not found by many.

“Their top place on this board helped them reach joint fourth with Rita and Janet.”

The competition takes place throughout Scotland simultaneously, playing the same hand and sending their score remotely via the Internet.

This then results in local as well as national winners, with the being organised by Orkney-based Ecats.

The competition took place on Tuesday, October 25.
