The Stornoway Bridge Club started its winter season with a change to its Committee members.
At the AGM there was a vote of thanks to the out-going President, Gerda Graauwmans and Vice-President, Murdo Kennedy and a warm welcome to their replacements Rita MacDonald and Iris Stewart.
Strangely enough there were no nominations for the post of Secretary and Treasurer so the current incumbents, Jenny Morrison and Henk Graauwmans remain in post.
The opening night saw a great turn-out of 5 tables for a Club Night Pairs competition.
It was lovely to see everyone back after the summer break, refreshed from their holidays but for some showing evidence of being a bit rusty at the Bridge table!
This didn’t affect the winners though. Rita Macdonald and Janet Smith had a magnificent evening and finished with a score of 71%, with 6 outright tops and only one bottom (against Colin Scott and Bryan Harris).
In second place with 67% were Stewart MacDonald and Derek MacKenzie and in 3rd place were Ken MacDonald and Henk Graauwmans with 61%.
The following week the competition was the White Horse Cup and the hands couldn’t have been more different. They were really tricky to bid and there were lots of muttering about voids and singletons.
If the Dealing Machine had a personality it would have been described as perverse!
Interestingly, the percentages were a lot lower this week with half the pairs only just making it above 50% and the other half only just dropping below 50%.
Congratulations to Norah MacDonald and Murdo Kennedy who came first with a score of 56%
In joint second were Iris Stewart and Sylvia Taylor and Ken MacDonald and Dave Gormley with 54%
Competition Bridge is held on Tuesday night at the Golf Club at 7pm and anyone interested in playing should contact any member of the Club or the Secretary Jenny Morrison on 01851860333 for further information.
Improvers Bridge is played on Thursday (as above) but we also welcome anyone who wishes to learn how to play this magnificent game. Don’t worry if you don’t have a partner as we have players available to make up the numbers.
