Busy weekend for SRAC with prizegiving and cross country event

It was a really busy weekend for the Stornoway Running and Athletics Club last weekend.

The morning saw the club organising the final race of three in the Alex Murray Lewis and Harris Cross Country Series, with a balloon race thrown in for good measure, and there will be a full report of the cross-country action in next week’s Gazette.

Then in the evening it was time to celebrate the club’s athletes many achievements of 2015 at the somewhat later than usual annual prizegiving.

It was a massively successful year for the club culminating in SRAC being nominated in the Scottish Athletics Awards for the first time for ‘Impact Club of the Year’.

With the Senior membership having doubled over the last year to over 100 members, and the junior membership having also increased to over 100, SRAC is very much on the rise.

The club can also boast of eight medals at National level, a fantastic achievement, and the club has four national titles.

The annual shindig was held at Stornoway Golf Club once again, and was a great occasion and without doubt one of the best in recent times.

An opportunity for families, coaches, seniors and juniors to meet up and chill and reflect on the year.

Of course the main reason for getting together was to recognise and celebrate the club’s athletes, both juniors and seniors, and following a fine curry meal, it was time for the awards, with the Junior winners first to be revealed.

The Junior Awards started with a new initiative. The club awarded a number of certificates of achievement to the youngest SRAC juniors - recognising Effort, Enthusiasm, or Attendance or a combination of all three.

The first time winners of the certificates were Stewart Graham, Leon Campbell, Cameron MacLeod, Katie MacIver, Amy MacMillan, and Isla MacDonald.

Well done to them!
