This Saturday, July 23, sees the Western Taxiway at Stornoway Airport given over to a feast of motoring nostalgia as 40 Classic Cars from the Highlands and Islands of Scotland take to the Quarter Mile Drag Strip.
The event, a first for the Western Isles involving Classic Cars, has come about through a unique partnership between Lewis Car Club (LCC), Western Isles Classic Car Club (WICCC) and Highland Old Skool Ford (HOSF).
Up to 20 Classic Fords from the Highland Old Skool Ford group are scheduled to visit Lewis for their Annual Tour over this weekend and local partners have organised a packed programme of motorsport action for these special guests.
While on the island, the HOSF visitors will take part in a Classic Autotest at Lewis Karting Centre (Friday evening) and a Karting Enduro, again at Lewis Karting Centre (Saturday morning) but the showpiece event of the weekend will be the Classic Car Quarter Mile Drag at Stornoway Airport on Saturday evening, when 40 HOSF and WICCC cars take to the Strip.
Access is opposite the Parkend housing and gates open at 6.00pm, ready for the first race at 6.30pm.
On conclusion of the racing, there will be an opportunity for spectators to view the cars close up and to chat to their dedicated, if a little mad, owners.
Stornoway Round Table will run a family barbeque and teas and coffees will be available.
Spectators will be treated to a visual feast of motoring nostalgia with emotive brands like the Chrysler Avenger Tiger, Ford Escort Mexico, Opel Manta, Porsche 911, VW Beetle and eight Ford Escort RS 2000’s lining up against Lewis Car Club’s Portatree Drag Timing System.
Some cars will be heavily modified while others will be perfectly preserved examples of some iconic brands, looking like they’ve just rolled out of the showroom.
Talking about the forthcoming weekend, Iain Macleod of Highland Old Skool Ford told the Gazette: “We are really looking forward to this year’s tour – at least 30 HOSF members coming to an island near you soon!
“I’m certain this year’s tour will be just as much fun with our good friends at Lewis Car Club and WICCC organising an action packed weekend of Classic motor sport.
“What could be better than seeing these motors of the 60s,70s and 80s fight it out on the Quarter Mile Drag Strip? A nostalgic trip down memory lane .... yes please!”
Entry is £5 at the gate and all proceeds go to Bethesda Nursing Home and Hospice, the Leanne Fund, Alzheimers Western Isles, Western Isles Kidney Machine Trust, Western Isles Kidney Patients’ Association and National Autistic Society (Western Isles).
