Boxsoccer comes to Lewis

The Lewis & Harris Junior Football Association, along with the Comhairle Sport and Health Department, were delighted to welcome Box Soccer to the Island recently for what is hoped is just the start of a long and successful partnership between the three organisations. Box Soccer is the brainchild of Ian Cathro, current assistant manager at Newcastle FC and previously an assistant manager at both Rio Ave FC (Portugal) and Valencia FC (Spain).

Box Soccer is a cognitive based training programme that looks to work on a player’s technique whilst simultaneously developing game intelligence through an array of drills that simulate the most common scenarios and patterns of play found in the modern game. Darren Murray, the new lead coach for Box Soccer, put eight local coaches through their paces over two days last week with a view to them sitting an assessment in the very near future.

All the coaches in attendance found the course challenging, but very enjoyable and informative.

It is hoped that, once the coaches have been assessed, Box Soccer camps will be set up through the school holidays and possibly evening clinics over the winter period.

Both the Lewis & Harris Junior Football Association and the Comhairle Sport & Health department would like to thank, John Colquhoun (Ex Celtic and Hearts player and currently Managing Director of Box Soccer) and Darren Murray (Ex First Team Coach of Coventry FC and Director of Youth Football at Hearts FC) for providing this fantastic opportunity to bring Box Soccer to Lewis and Harris. We look forward to welcoming them again in the very near future and establishing Box Soccer here in Lewis & Harris.
