Five new faces in Select fold for Gazette Cup clash

Billy Flower is hoping his quintet of new faces in the pool for next weekend’s Stornoway Gazette Challenge Cup prove to be his very own Famous Five on their Lewis and Harris Select bows.

A raft of injuries to regulars and key figures has handed opportunities to new blood who the Select manager is hoping can step up and stake a claim to retain their places even when everyone is available again.

Among the new faces in the Lewis and Harris Select squad to face Orkney on Saturday, August 30th, are Lochs’ midfield goalscorer and all round passing maestro Angie Campbell, Aths’ lightning quick stopper Donnie Macleod, Carloway’s Mr Consistency DI Maclennan and West Side duo Martainn Shields and Innes Iain Morrison – the latter of which is the league’s top goalscorer in 2014.

The six will make the trip across the Minch with the rest of the Select squad (named in full below) next Saturday for the annual Stornoway Gazette Challenge Cup contest.

Flower said: “Looking forward to the challenge of the Stornoway Gazette Cup match against Orkney.

“I am well aware that this will be a very difficult game for us as Orkney have made the bold decision to enter the North Caledonian League this winter for the first time in their history and have stated that they will be using the match against Lewis and Harris to fine tune their full squad for the league which commences the Saturday after our game.

“I always look forward to these games and I like to compare where Lewis and Harris currently stands against other island opposition,.”

“We have quite a few new faces in the squad for this game and whilst welcoming them and looking forward to working with them, my challenge to them is to make sure they seize this opportunity with the huge North Caledonian Cup quarter final match fast approaching and try and secure a place in that squad. Unfortunately, with a congested local fixture list at this end of the season, we don’t have the preparation time that we would have liked but we will be ready for the challenge that this match will present us with.

“Every player chosen in my squad has been watched over a number of games and is ready for representative football. Let’s all get behind them and help bring the Stornoway Gazette Cup back home across the Minch.
