Football action for Royal National Mod

A series of familar footbabling foes will cross studded boots this weekend as Lewis and Harris and Glasgow Island compete for the Mod Cup.

The match will take place at Smith Avenue at 2:15pm with the sides to do battle for the annual Mod trophy.

Lewis and Harris go into the tie in good form having thrashed Lossiemouth 6-0 last weekend on the back of a 2-0 win over Orkney. Both ties were cup matches in the North Caledonian League’s Football Times Cup.

Meanwhile, Glasgow Island missed out on league glory by a single point, and a last minute cup final defeat amid inspiring wins against high profile opposition in the Scottish Amateur Cup in the last couple of seasons, it has certainly been a rollercoaster ride for Glasgow Island.

True to this, it has been a dream start that plunged into a bit of a nightmare for the ‘Weegie Teuchters’ this season as an ever growing injury list takes its toll and is flying in the face of an unbeaten 7 game run.

Last week saw the Island team lose in the second round of the Scottish Amateur Cup by the odd goal in six to Shortlees AFC of Kilmarnock, one of the favourites.

GI manager, Murdo J Graham commented: “It was hard to take after our historic sixth round run last year, but that can happen in the Scottish Cup given the quality of opposition out there. We made a fist of it in the first half, but they blew us away in the second. You cannot really go in against teams like that with half a team watching from the sidelines. No excuses, though - they had a player, Kier Knapp, we just couldn’t live with and I think they will be the eventual winners of the competition.”

Glasgow Island see the Mód Cup as a way to get things back on track. Graham continued: “It has been a wee while since we played the Select so there is a wee edge to this game, as there always is. A lot of the guys have played for both teams and are best pals with their opponents off the park so it always makes for a great game.”
