Lewis and Harris win inter-island bragging rights as Mackay bags treble

Kid goals Luke Mackay, still just 17, netted a stunning second-half hat-trick for the Select after Andrew Murray’s first-half double had given the hosts a slight edge going into the break.

The first-half had been a very even affair with Uist and Barra, like Lewis and Harris, were without a number of key players and regulars.

But they were playing well, moving the ball around at pace with a good zip.

Keith Macdonald almost gave them the lead with an unorthodox effort where he made a block tackle on the edge of the Lewis and Harris box which sent the ball looping into the air over keeper James Macleod where it cannoned off the underside of the crossbar.

The home side took the lead midway though the half as Gordon Campbell was sent scampering clear on the right flank and his marauding burst was picked out by a glorious through ball by Campbell Macdonald. His cross into the box wasn’t cleared and Murray swivelled and hooked the ball into the bottom corner from 14 yards.

Uist and Barra hit back quickly as stopper Harry Luney channeled his inner ‘Neymar’ and curled an unstoppable free kick away from Macleod and into the top right hand corner from 25 yards.

At the other end Luke Mackay hit the deck after receiving a nudge in the back with the resulting spot kick being stroked home by Murray to restore the Lewis and Harris advantage.

At half-time home manager Kevin Anderson sent on Lewis ‘Preston’ Robinson for his Select bow and the newly signed West Side man made an immediate impression.

His pace, power and tenacity caused Uist and Barra no end of problems as he assisted two goals for club mate Luke Mackay in a matter of minutes.

Mackay completed the second-half rout and his own treble before the end with a close range flick over the keeper.
