Lochs reach Moldova Lewis Cup final

Robert Mackenzie fired Lochs into a second successive cup final with a hard fought win over Stornoway Athletic at Goathill.

The Maroons midfielder continued his impressive recent form with two-goal display to down Aths and book a spot in the forthcoming Lewis Moldova Cup final.

His first goal came early on with a trademark powerfully direct and individual run which saw him cut in from the right before skipping between two Aths stoppers and rifling into the net.

Lochs were moving the ball around well and were well on top but at half-time just a single goal separated the pair.

Mackenzie added a second shortly after the restart but any hopes for the travelling supporters that they could now coast into the cup final were dashed as falling two-goals down woke Aths from their slumber.

The hosts went for broke and threw everything at Lochs and deservedly pulled a goal back on 55-minutes through John Woodman. The same player had a number of later sights at goal but shot narrowly wide on occasion.

After the match Lochs player manager David Macmillan praised his side for marching into the final after a tough run of fixtures which he admits has drained his side.

“It was a tight game, Aths played well and I felt we were a bit lethargic,” he admitted.

“I think that was our fourth game in eight or nine days and you could tell. I think the games have been catching up with us and especially with them all being big games. Now another semi-final on a Monday night after a tough cup final on Friday, we were a bit burnt out.

“Both goals were good and scored by Robert. Aths had their moments to get back into the game but I think we just about deserved it.”
