Son of Stornoway makes Scotland debut

A talented footballer with strong connections to Lewis has made his international football debut after starring for Scotland's under-17 national team.

Hamish Morrison – whose father Murdo attended Stornoway Primary and the Nicolson Institute – was a late substitute in the Scotland U-17s’ 2-1 victory over Iceland in a friendly at Greenock’s Cappielow Park last month.

The 16-year-old right back, who plays for Brighton & Hove Albion, was in the starting line up for a second match against the Icelanders two days later, and now hopes to keep in manager Scot Gemmill’s thoughts for future squads and qualifers.

Hamish, whose grandmother Mairi Morrison and Aunt Morag live in Stornoway, has been with the English Championship club’s academy since he was eight, and has just been awarded a two-year full-time scholarship, starting in July, one step from a professional contract.

Brighton-born Hamish – a regular visitor to the island over the years – qualifies to play for both Scotland and England, but was approached by the Scottish Football Association after being scouted playing for Brighton’s U-18 team.

He said: “Although I have lived all my life in England, it is a great honour to play for Scotland.

“Now that I’ve made my debut it would be great to get some more games.”
