Wright move for Point teen who pens Ross County deal

A Point teenager has revaled his delight after penning a three-year deal with Scottish Premiership side Ross County's youth team.

Matthew Wright, from Bayble in Point, was spotted in action for the North of Scotland Schools Select by County scouts who invited the 14-year-old over to take part in a hat-trick of matches.

And the goal-grabber continued his remarkable ability to score with a strike for County against Alloa which persuaded the Dingwall-based side to tie Wright down for the next three years.

“Everyone has been really great with me so far,” grinned Wright as he spoke to the Gazette at the pitch of his home side Point FC.

“I‘m really excited about this chance and I’m looking forward to seeing how it goes. I’ve played three games for Ross County so far and managed to score a goal against Alloa too so I’m pleased with how it has gone.”

Having just turned 14 in October, Wright is amongst the youngest in his age group but the Lewis teen is no stranger to playing with older boys.

In addition to playing with Point’s Under-15 side, Wright is also part of the Nicolson Insitute S3 team, the North of Scotland Schools Team and also the Western Isles U15 Development Squad.

As part of his deal with County, Wright will travel away almost every single Saturday to play or train with the squad - including away matches - which will require an overnight stay for Matthew and his father Alex, himself a keen footballer who has kept goal for Point FC for 20-years.
