June 2 saw 80 competitors take part in Benbecula’s annual Half Marathon.

With the Fun Run and Fasttrack (under 12s) events, over 160 participated. The events, starting and finishing at Sgoil Lionacleit are now a significant and long standing event in the Uists.

Race Organizer Iain Hogg commented: “The race is only possible because of the many enthusiastic volunteers who give up their time to carry out the many tasks needed to be done before and during the event.”

Mr Hogg went on to praise the event sponsors: “I would like to thank our sponsors Uist & Barra Sports Council, the Health Board’s Health Promotions, Cllr Taylor’s ward fund and the Dark Island Hotel. I would also like to extend a special thank you to Lovats Supermarkets who at short notice stepped in as our main sponsor.”

The men’s winner was Greig Glendinning (Bellahouton Road Runners) with an impressive 1:16:21.

The ladies winner was Karen Lyons (Mainland Mules) coming in on 1:36:11

BBC Alba covered the event as part of documentary featuring local runner Shone Morrison who scooped runner-up in the ladies category (1:36:34). Shona will be competing in the Inter Island Games with the Half Marathon being a part of her training schedule.
