Kayak challenge in memory of Stornoway man

THE challenge of kayaking from Largs to Stornoway was completed by adventurer Bruce Jolliffe yesterday (Wednesday).

Bruce, an experienced kayaker of 24 years, spent three weeks and 313 gruelling miles in the harshest conditions at the tail end of the Scottish winter, paddling his way across the unforgiving tidal waters of the West of Scotland during the vernal equinox.

Speaking before his trip, Bruce said: “I live on the west coast, so I know what the weather can throw at you and how it can kick the sea right up in no time at all. This is going to be the coldest, toughest, longest paddling trip I’ve ever done. I think I’m as prepared as anyone could be, but you’d best ask me that again in April.’

Inspired by the memory of his close friend Andy from Stornoway who passed away at 33 from a bone cancer, Bruce took the daft notion of kayaking from his home to Andy’s in the Hebrides.

“This challenge was originally just a pipe dream, but with the route planned, training underway and donations coming in; it’s all become very real.”

Bruce is trying to raise £10,000 for charities close to his heart, The Royal Marsden Hospital , The Beatson Oncology Fund and The RNLI.
