The South Uist cycling star was a comfortable five and a half minutes clear of third placed Maxine Filby as she took a prestigious silver gong at Cathkin Braes.

And Kerry couldn’t hide their joy after a hugely impressive ride.

“I’m so so happy and relieved,” beamed Kerry.

“It was a tough day out at Cathkin with a long race at six laps. The course was great with some cool new features as well as greasy and sketchy after the rain, making it even more physical than normal! I was super nervous today but knew I could ride well if I just ‘kept the heid’ and was smart with my racing.

“I went hard from the gun and mid race when it was clear that there was daylight between me and third place, I focused on being smooth and not making any silly mistakes. I had punctured on Thursday whilst training here and it’s easy to make a mistake - I’ve had my fair share of nasty crashes here too.

“For the first time in ages I started to cramp today too so that forced me to back off a little too mid race.

“The steep climbs were brutal today and I barely got up any of them as they were so slippy and nasty!

“There was no way I was going to catch Annie Last who had a fantastic ride to take the British Jersey, really pleased for her and also my buddy Maxine who took the final spot on the podium! So chuffed for her.”

Kerry’s sister Kirsty MacPhee also stormed into the top-10 with a sensational ride at the British Mountain Bike Championships.

Kirsty, who has been steadily climbing up the placings and getting stronger and faster with each race, took eighth place in a field of 16 talented riders, as the MacPhee girls left their tyre tracks all over the championships.

“The best thing about getting a good result is being able to thank everyone who continually get behind me with a British Silver medal,” continued Kerry cheerily.

“I was so happy for Team Rock and Road and Kenny and so pleased he could be there today in the pits. It was also brilliant having my sister Kirsty race today too. She came away with a fantastic eighth and I’m very proud of her! Thank you also to Scottish Cycling and mechanic Carl who were there today and who continue to support me throughout the year.

“All the Scottish spectators who were there today were fabulous. It’s the coolest thing ever hearing people cheer you on (even when they call you by your sisters name haha) so thank you peeps and to Paul and Lochann who came to cheers me on and see their first ever mountain bike race.”

She added: “I’m gubbed now but big thanks to everyone who helps- I know I sound like a broken record but I wouldn’t be able to do it without a team behind me. Rock and Road Cycles, Merida, Scottish Cycling, Loch Duart, Jo Walters Trust, MacInnes Bros and Stirling Optical.”

The medal comes hot on the heels of another triumph for Kerry after just last week we reported how she cracked the top 50 at the Mountain Bike World Cup for the first time.

The Kilphedar cyclist secured a 49th place finish at the latest round of World Cup action, this time in Lenzerheide, Switzerland.
