Leòdhas face Lochcarron in preseason Roddy Blind Cup

Camanachd Leòdhais begin this year’s shinty action on Saturday with their only pre-season friendly, invited to Lochcarron for the Roddy Blind Cup.

This should be a good challenge for Iain “Diablo” Sinclair’s troops against a team in North Division One, but one with whom they competed well two years ago in North Division Three. Sinclair will take the opportunity to give many of his young recruits who have been working hard over the winter some game time as well as get the more experienced players moving again after a long lay-off.

It will also be an apt captaining debut for Kenny Murray, a former Lochcarron player and manager, who has made a big impact in Lewis since signing last season. Kenny lives in Lochcarron still and is committed to travelling to the island for games. However, he is looking forward to a more local scenario this weekend “I’ll be walking to the game.” he said.

Lewis’ fixtures for the new-look North Division Two have been decided for the new season as well, with the Camanachd Association publishing the list last week. Inverness is first up on March 7th at the Bught Park, before some long trips to Aberdeen University and Glengarry amongst others. The first home game will be held at Shawbost against Kilmallie on May 16th. It is likely to be a busy and challenging season with reacquaintances with Lochaber and Boleskine on the cards as well. There are also two island derbies with Skye in prospect. Outside of league shinty, the annual Hebridean Celtic Festival Cup will get its 9th running against Uist Camanachd on 18th July.

The club will continue its sponsorship deals with Woody’s Express as shirt sponsors and WJ Macdonald the Butchers as Match Ball Sponsors.

The club also made a cameo in a recent episode of BBC’s Katie Morag. In Katie Morag and the Big Shinty Match. Masquerading as the Coll Shinty Team, the boys will be hoping for a better outcome in reality this season, as they succumbed to a late goal from Neily Beag who took the honours for Struay Camanachd. The episode can be found on the BBC iPlayer CBeebies channel for the next month.
