Stornoway’s young athletes ended the track and field season with a bang in September with outstanding performances against the very best competition Scotland has to offer.
Earlier this month a large contingent travelled to Inverness, including several under 11 athletes on their first mainland trip.
Aiden Finagan won the boys shot putt competition with a throw of 5.02m, with David Morrison in second place achieving 4.62. Callum Mighton came fourth in long jump with a PB of 2.69m.
In the sprints David Morrison just pipped Harry Bray to take third place in the 75m after a good run by both boys, while Krysta Bray and Darcy McIntosh finished just out of the placings in the girls race.
The under 13s were joined by Troy Scott. In an excellent day of competition Troy achieved new personal best performances in all three of his events. A throw of 7.54m in the shot putt was enough to take second place, as was a javelin throw of 17.53m. Finally, Troy achieved a win in the high jump with a jump of 1.27m.
Troy has recently moved to Edinburgh with his mother Jackie, a former high jump coach with SRAC. Stornoway’s loss is Edinburgh’s gain and we wish Jackie and Troy every success with their new club.
Meanwhile in the girls shot putt Ellie MacLean threw 6.23m to take an excellent third place, also achieving third place on the track over 800m.
On the track Sian MacDonald put in a great run to come a very close third in the 100m.
Under 15s Andrew Horne and Jonathon Morrison came second and fourth respectively in their long jump competition, while Mary MacLeod was second in the girls competition with an outstanding jump of 4.34m.
Girls under 17 trio Jenny MacTaggart, Abbie Mackay and Amy Hutchison were second, third and fourth respectively in their 100m race, rounding off a excellent season.
Boys, Connor MacLean and Michael MacMillan set the scene for the following week’s performance in a close 800m, with Michael narrowly missing out to Connor in the home straight.
Overall, a good day’s competition for the last “away trip” of the track and field season!
