Stornoway RFC U15 team welcomed Ellon RFC to a sunny Bayhead for their third game of the season in the Caledonia North league.

The game started off fast with a lot of good running from both sides combined with some hard tackling and determined rucking. Both teams were well matched both in terms of size and also ability which showed as Stornoway took an early lead only to surrender it a few minutes later.

As the first half went on the game was being shared equally with the Stornoway pack winning good ball from the set piece but when it went out to the backs Cameron McClements playing at 10 was being put under huge pressure from the Ellon defence which caused disruption in the midfield.

As the first half drew to a close a try each were scored and only Cameron’s excellent kicking the difference between the sides.

The second half started with Ellon determined to take the game away from Stornoway as they pinned the team back in their own 22 for long periods and only last ditch tackles being made to save the scoreline. Aggressive in defence were the front row of Alexander MacKay (who was later named man of the match) David MacPhee and Anil Thapa, however, in the warm sunshine, this took its toll and after a long period of attack the Ellon side took the lead and the Stornoway heads went down.

With 10 minutes to go the young Stornoway team were down 24-19 and tired, after a long chat behind the posts with their coach they gave everything they had to try and salvage the game and that came in the last minute of the match where they finally scored a try which made it 24 - 24.

After a difficult day it was down to Cameron to take the conversion in front of an excited crowd which he calmly slotted through centre of the posts to give Stornoway a fantastic 26-24 win.

Try scorers on the day were Ronan Sinclair, Alfie MacMillan, Calum MacKay and Uisdean Smith.
