Scotland rugby stars Jonny Gray and Alex Dunbar visited Stornoway RFC in the latest Scottuish Rugby initiative – Rugby Force.

The international stars made the trip north as part of the initiative, aided by partner RBS, to open up all member clubs to the surrounding community.

Blessed with glorious sunshine, the club opened it’s doors to both young and not so young, to come along and enjoy some of the clubs hospitality.

Current Glasgow Warriors and Scotland stars Gray and Dunbar proved to be great sports and total gentlemen.
Junior and senior players alike, along with those that just came to watch, enjoyed the time that the stars took to talk, be photographed, sign autographs, coach and finally play alongside the youngsters.

Dunbar spent time with the backs, going through some moves. While the forwards were treated to some line out and scrummaging pointers from Jonny.
This really was a great opportunity for SYRFC to showcase what rugby is all about. The parents of the children that were in attendance were full of praise, many offering to help in future in any way they could, as this is an area where the club struggle. Seeing so many children, boys and girls, enjoying themselves is such a healthy environment can only be a positive thing.
The club Chairman, Colin Maciver, was delighted with the way the day went commenting: “I can’t speak highly enough of Jonny and Alex, they were so easy going and nothing was any trouble.”

As a club Stornoway are hopeful that days like these will become more prominent over the coming season and although the chance of international stars being there might be slim, the endeavour and enthusiasm from the club members will only go from strength to strength.
The opportunity for the youngsters to develop is there for all to see, with the club having two juniors selected for Highlands and Islands U16 in David Campbell and Dean Drummond, and the possibility of moving in to represent Caley district.

The two youngsters have been travelling back and fore the mainland, both training and playing, so look out for a progress report in a forthcoming issues.
The club would like to thank RBS, SRU, Glasgow Warriors and Leila Angus, but especially Jonny and Alex who made the day so special.
