Na h-Eileanan an Iar SNP MSP, Alasdair Allan, has encouraged islanders to nominate a batonbearer to help carry the Queens Baton when it reaches the Western Isles on July 8 on its journey to the opening of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Alasdair Allan commented: “The Commonwealth Games in Glasgow will be a huge event for Scotland and everyone has an opportunity to play their part when the baton relay makes its way through every part of Scotland on its way to the opening ceremony.
“Islanders can nominate those they feel have made a significant contribution to their local community, improved the lives of others or triumphed against the odds to carry the baton as one of 4000 others on its final leg through Scotland.
“The Western Isles are rightly known for their volunteering and community spirit and I can imagine that there will be many people deserving of a place carrying the Queen’s Baton. I hope that this will help raise the profile of sport on the islands, and that it will increase interest in the Commonwealth Games in the islands as we approach July 2014.”
