Huge win for u16s as Stornoway win Elgin epic

Two even sides produced an exciting match in Elgin last weekend, scoring 6 tries each with difference being the more accurate kicking of the Stornoway side, converting 4 of their tries to Muntly's 2.

After suffering a heavy defeat against Ross Sutherland the previous week this was a pleasing performance from the Stornoway boys.

Stornoway perhaps had the edge up front but with very little between the them neither side was able to dominate.

Stornoway’s lineout worked well and the scrum was solid providing good ball for the backs to work with.

Ball retention was good, allowing Stornoway to build phases and put pressure on the Muntly defence.

When they retained the ball they looked dangerous and four of their tries came following sustained periods of possession. Very pleasing for the coaches, but more work to be done on the speed of recycling ball from rucks.

The Muntly boys played their part with their speedy backs in particular causing problems for the Stornoway defence, highlighting room for improvement in tackling and defensive organisation.

Donnie Macdonald on the left wing had a cracking battle with his opposite number, just about coming out on top.

The Stornoway backs showed some nice touches with talented stand-off Keiran McEwan gaining in confidence with each game he plays.

Full back Samuel Macleod also impressed as did Stuart Hamilton, who’s work rate throughout the match was almost rewarded with a try in the corner.

In the forwards Aaron Macleod possibly had his best game yet and James Mutch made some powerful runs. Man of the Match was Stornoway No. 8 John Hughson with 2 tries capping off a storming display.

Nine U14’s also travelled to join in a training match involving players from Moray and Huntly for some much needed match practice. The boys learned a lot from the experience and will hopefully take that into this week’s training sessions in preparation for the visit of Caithness this Saturday. Rhys Macritchie showed up well.
